3. Using Your Superannuation for Treatment

Early access to superannuation for dental treatment is strictly regulated by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Superannuation may only be released early on compassionate grounds, and only for people who meet the ATO's specific eligibility criteria.

Dental Members Australia does not approve, influence, or guarantee any superannuation application. We do not provide financial advice, and nothing on this page is financial advice or a recommendation that you access your superannuation.

ATO Eligibility

Under the ATO's rules, compassionate release for dental treatment generally requires all of the following:

The treatment is certified as necessary to treat a life-threatening illness or injury, to alleviate acute or chronic pain, or to alleviate acute or chronic mental illness.
The treatment is not readily available to the patient through the public health system.
The application is supported by written reports from two registered practitioners, one of whom must be a specialist. For dental treatment, this can be a general practitioner together with a dental practitioner, or two dental practitioners, with at least one being a specialist.

The ATO assesses each application independently and on its own facts. Approval decisions and processing times are entirely outside Dental Members Australia’s control, and a significant proportion of applications are refused.

Important Notice for Patients

Compassionate release of superannuation is intended as a last resort, to be considered only after other options such as personal savings, payment plans, finance, or private health insurance have been exhausted.

Because accessing your superannuation early can significantly reduce your retirement savings, you are strongly encouraged to obtain independent financial advice before applying, and to rely on the ATO's own published information rather than on any marketing materials.

8. Limits on Our Liability

These terms, together with our Disclaimer and Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about your use of this website, and replace any earlier terms about that use. Nothing in this clause limits or excludes any liability we may have for misleading or deceptive conduct. If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, that part will be read down to the minimum extent necessary or severed, and the rest will continue to apply.
